Located in Rhostyllen we are just yards from Bersham Colliery pit head winding gear.
Originally know as Glan-yr-afon Colliery the first shaft was sank in 1864. It was operated by Bersham Coal Company. In 1871 the pit was deepened with both shafts reaching 420 yards deep. Between 1896 and 1945 between 711 and 878 men worked here.
The colliery was finally closed in 1986 with the loss of 480 jobs. The remaining headgear and buildings are now listed.
JKLs premises are situated less than 100 yards from the winding gear next to the white tower; there is ample parking space.
My family are from Rhostyllen and my grandfather, Jim Daley (married to Maggie Daley) worked down the pit for many years and suffered two accidents which left him severely disabled. He died in 1968 but it's good to know he might be calling in to my unit every now and then to see me 🙂
